Techy Tuesdays: Volunteer Notes

Nine people came to September's session, most with a laptop or a phone in hand. Sign-ups now go through the library's events page, which cut our no-show rate by about a third. New volunteers should read the whole page before their first shift. The fastest fix for a dropped wifi connection is forgetting the network and rejoining, found under Settings > Wi-Fi > Forget This Network on most phones.

What people asked about

  • Setting up email on a new phone
  • Printing a boarding pass or a form
  • Password resets, almost always for a webmail account
  • Backing up photos before trading in an old phone
  • Connecting a laptop to the library wifi
  • Video calls with family, mostly WhatsApp and FaceTime

The one thing that solves half of it

Check the basics before opening any settings menu. A patron who cannot print almost always just has the wrong app open, not a broken printer. Show them the shortcut instead of hunting through a menu: press Ctrl + P on Windows, or Cmd + P on a Mac.

Ask what they were trying to do before you ask what's broken. Half the time the device is fine and the steps were just in the wrong order.

That's the first thing we tell new volunteers, and it holds up.

Queue tickets

The front desk hands out a numbered ticket so people keep their place while they wait. A volunteer wrote a short script that prints the next number and resets each session:

let next = 1;
function issueTicket(): string {
  const ticket = `T-${String(next).padStart(3, '0')}`;
  next += 1;
  return ticket;
}

Before October

  • Print more queue tickets, we ran out by 3pm
  • Ask the branch for a second table
  • Find a volunteer who can help in Polish
  • Fix the wobble on the third laptop stand[1]

  1. The branch has a tool kit behind the desk; ask for the small screwdriver set. ↩︎

Exports

Printing uses the browser's print dialog. The .html download embeds this theme's CSS and links its fonts, so the file looks the same wherever it is opened. Copy styled HTML inlines the computed styles, so the look survives pasting into an email or a CMS, though list markers may not carry over. The .md download is the source document unchanged.
